Apple’s iPad tablet is being used by doctors, lawyers and businesspeople to ease their workloads, but many believe the popular touchscreen device can’t yet replace a laptop for functions such as writing long documents.

Aluratek’s E-reader Cracks the $100 Barrier

The price of an e-reader from Aluratek dropped to under $100 over the weekend, which could escalate a price war that broke out between device makers in June.
The US$99 Libre eBook Reader Pro, available at the Newegg retail store, was previously priced at $169. Pitched to be “small enough to fit into your pocket,” the device has a 5-inch black-and-white LCD screen and offers 24 hours of battery life.

Dish streams live content to mobile devices

Dish will be serving up live satellite TV on a variety of mobile devices, including Android smartphones, iPads, iPhones, iPod Touches and BlackBerries.
The service – which is slated to be free for subscribers – will kick off in September-October 2010.

What’s Next For Apple?

Apple has brought the iPhone to reasonable maturity. The iPad completes our need for a seriously portable tablet device for e-mail, browsing and video. What’s next for Apple?
One question to ask is whether the company needs to soon develop any new, original products given that Steve Jobs likes to keep the development teams lean and focused. Any new product would have to justify the allocation of resources, and it would have to solve a fundamental problem in Apple’s unique way so that, once again, customers would embrace it with enthusiasm. Some, including me, think that product is the Apple TV successor.

The most notable surprise in Apple Inc.’s third-quarter earnings report was the strong sales from the company’s oldest business line — its Mac computers.
